Corporate Ideally

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Copyrights were meant to protect a human's intellectual creation from theft,
which isn't quite the same as ownership.
Somehow we forgot this and are run amok,
with these false entities laying claim to the what humans build.
Corporations lawyer up and stake claims the world over,
seeking ownership of every notion and ideal and even the natural,
that belongs to the people.
When they themselves are ideals,
incorporation, creations of human ingenuity.
And I am sick of them laying claim to my legacy.
I am human and I will claim my destiny.

'Someone tell me where I went wrong, so I can find the words to this song. Please tell me how I was born, with no light to write on.'

Footprints in the dust, ripples through time, when the stars obey our commands, as far as light shines. We are human.

Went out to walk the street and feel the people, hear words that fill me with breath and wonder, to draw inspiration from the crowd. Life.

After a while you admit truth to yourself. You don't have a bad memory, you're just uninterested in remembering many things.

I got nervous when they started leaving me out of trivial office matters. It was as if they were on to the fact that I didn't care.

Going Home

They say home is where the heart is.
I say that's where the gun lives.
Sometimes where the son lives.
Always where the sun is.
Home is the blue orb spins.
Home is one where all is.
All that matter that is.
All that matters, that is.
Home is origami folds.
Home is kamikaze rolls.
Home is bright hue rainbows.
Home is intercontinental ballistic missile shows,
schizophrenic jaebi flows.
Home is cold winter toes,
Home is revenge against foes.
Home is depth where no man goes,
death where all men go,
as sure as life that glows,
poetic rivers flow,
switch it across skin and scold the bold,
where whelps bathed in sin never mend.
Home is where I start this,
art embedded heart lives,
where the literary artist is,
me.

Falling in Love

I'm falling in love with this woman,
I have yet to meet.
Our relationship is a silent one.
It began when I was a child,
and grew stronger in no time.
Our bond,
a series of unspoken agreements,
inherit in who we are.
I am a fool,
for giving her my heart,
when I do not know her name.
But see her through my eyes,
and you can understand my pain.
When she first walked into the room,
my eyes lit up.
Everything I imagined a woman could be,
she was.
Soft, elegant, her presence put air at ease.
I would have done anything to have her.
Eyes like an oasis,
assuring me,
thirst no longer.
I knew then, that I could marry her.
With each step,
her body seems to grow,
take new form and shape,
one woman comprising so many things.
Supple wine,
soft, lush, velvety, and very attractively round and tasty.
I want so badly,
but I can say nothing.
Happily, I don't need to.
She knows what I know.
She is my vision and I am her reach.
Marriage is beneath us,
cut from the same cloth.
I know what that little smirk on her face means.
I know how long her skirt will rise on her thigh,
before she unconsciously pulls it down into place.
I close my eyes and remember her aroma,
just her skin, naked breath, nature of her hair.
I need her fragrance everywhere.
And her flavors ignite my passion,
unlike all the rest.
She sits across from me,
treating me like a toy,
play thing,
different games ward off the mundane.
She will not complement my deficiencies,
but augment my proficiencies.
We get better together.
I fall in love more and more,
everytime I see her.
I'm excited to discover what's in store.

Sci-Fi tips for the Obama Administration: Fuel

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

The cat is pretty much out of the bag, even if it's not being fed regularly--Planet Earth is facing a sever sustainable energy crisis. Being the straightforward species that it is, humans look to burning as the principal means of extracting energy from matter. Crude oil, which accounts for a third of the earthlings energy supply will all but be depleted within 50 earth years. They will not only lose their ability to power their transport systems, but their socially constructed economy will finally be revealed as invalid. All because they have ignorantly allowed a depleting substance represent the wealth of their nations.

The way of life on planet earth will crumble into despair and uncertainty. While it's theoretically possible that humans can engineer solutions to prevent the pending catastrophe, they are far more likely to result to savagery, hording and wide-spread violence before first. They can be helped if we revive the waste management campaign. We know they are highly perceptible to visual images and so we must bombard them the most sustainable and achievable fuel alternative.

We did so in 1989 in the American film, Back to the Future II. Millions of humans received inspiring images of a scientist using garbage as a source of fuel for the automobile. Just think of what they could achieve for themselves if they used the one thing each of them produces. There is nothing that humanity is more adept at creating than garbage. They possess it in astronomical amounts and never have a need to sell or buy a supply of garbage. Waste is the matter humanity needs to burn as fuel if they are to survive as we know them.

Your contributions can give this to the human animal. We can cure them of their energy crisis. And all we have to do is inspire them to use their waste as their fuel.

Near Device, So Far

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

We all see it. Every day, all day, the multimedia world is growing. Techniques for rendering and fabricating devices that entertain and function as indispensable parts of our life in the palm of a hand. The phenomenon sees handheld devices surpassing our wildest expectations (some of us) and beginning to remind us of our coolest imagination.

Take the iPhone for instance. While the reasons it took the world by storm are deeply seated in Apple's adeptness at creating excitement for their products, it unveiled undeniably novel the design and interface categories. Not surprising. Design and interface are the cornerstones behind everything Apple sells. You see and feel it in their products--tight integration in computing devices and their components. The end result are music players, laptops and media marvels that look and feel--advanced.

And so with the iPhone, Apple ushered in a device that looks and behaves unlike any other, prompting many fanboys to herald the iPhone as THE future. Simultaneously, those same cheerleaders will excuse new toy of the future not having the best stability or interoperability. The conversation usually goes something like:

So does your iPhone allow you to edit files?

Uh no, but check out this cool flute app i downloaded!

Sure, iPhone owners are still happy with their purchase in most cases, but post-hype, I think we can all agree that however cool--the iPhone just isn't their in terms of doing everything everyone would like it to. More over--it isn't there in terms of doing everything it COULD do.

So how it it that even a company like Apple, so clearly focused on making sure every product they make plays works flawlessly with every other product the company produces. How is it a company so focused on pushing the envelope happily sells a device that feels like the prototype to the multimedia handset we deserve in 2009?

Quite simply, it's because the iPhone, like many of the bells and whistles of our failing economy, is a Near Device. Multimedia tools, gadgets and toys that approach an integrated solution, but ultimately settle for the pillars of the country America has become: Coolness and Profitability. For better or worse, the iPhone's research and development (R&D) was driven by the questions: Can this sell and how can we sell as many as possible?

I imagine that these were the mantra's of my buddies in business school, while I, a computer engineering major fully subscribed to the idiom: Scientists study the world as it is, Engineers create the world that is yet to be.

If you've ever heard of Star Trek, then you know quite well what the future looks like for some time to come. In it's canon, Star Trek aka the world that is yet to be, single handedly gave rise to the existing cell phones and bluetooth headsets, HDTV, push button technology. Let alone solidified our notions of holograms, interstellar travel, material synthesizers and lets not forget interracial dating. And ST is far from the only glimpse into devices of tomorrow. Literature and films are full of futuristic blueprints and yet, our electronic store shelves and homes are chock full of Near Devices.

Devices like my awesome diNovo Mini, which gives me just what i need in terms of portability and function to control my HTPC's (Home Theater Personal Computer) but won't allow me to control my stereos or TV's. Devices like my GPS unit that only wants to do GPS. Not music and DVD's as well.

Part of the reason we are being overrun by Near Devices is because we allow it as a consumer base. How many times have you bought a Near Device while simultaneously saying, I can't wait until the next generation where it will have XYZ?

On the other end, we allow our economic structure to overrun our social structure. Wu Tang said it best, "Cash Rules Everything Around Me"

.

Near Devices may be designed and soldered by folks with engineering degrees, but they are pushed onto store shelves by the same folks that can make you feel like your life is inept without a set of Cutco knives. Compound that with the coveted tenant and benefit of the free market, competition, and you have dozens of companies clamoring to bring us the same products over and over again.

While competition may be the only thing that gets most people out of the bed in the morning. Men and women going toe to toe is not the only strategy that brings out the best in us. When you have the best, they're even better when they combine forces. I'm talking about collaboration. There is some collaboration in the free market, but clearly not enough. I know this because collaboration between companies means integration between the gadgets they make. Far too much collaboration in the market exists as a result of remaining competitive. That means collaboration for the sake of making more CREAM. An in turn, engineers design and create for the sake of capital gain. True engineering exists to improve the life of the living.

When will we collaborate for the sake of collaboration?

I can imagine a world that does. A world free of Near Devices like the iPhone. A device with the design and interface of the iPhone, the information architecture and ingenuity of Google and the interoperability of Open Source programming:

"21st and 2nd--7 pm. Got it." I end the call with Charlie and confirm the prompt on my handset, asking me to save my meet up with Charlie to my organizer. As I approach my apartment door, I hear the familiar tones from my handset and door locks as they authenticate and allow me to enter. The knob resists a second before unlocking. The fingerprint readers' battery must be wearing low.

Inside, the neon glow of my control dock provides an orb of light in the foyer. I place my handset in the smooth rectangular lines, hearing an assuring click. In an instant, my apartment hums to life, the living room curtains gliding open while a single light over head rains into the foyer and kitchen ahead. I hear the evening news caster from the TV in the bedroom. There is a chime from the screen as I enter the bedroom, a reminder flashing across the evening news: 'Drinks with Charlie: 55 minutes.'

After a shower and a quick bite, I jump into my ride and place my handset into the dash. The car starts and my track list cuts from the speakers. The on board display queries: "Destination". Below it lists my last two points of interest and a bubble that reads: 'Charlie: 21st and 2nd'
--
A dream? Perhaps--but more like an iteration. But only in a world that doesn't' ask 'how can we profit from space travel' as a means to an end. Then we may finally begin to see a decline in Near Devices.

We deserve a world where the best urges of Humanity are supported and enriched. We deserve to boldly go where no Human has gone before. Not to make a quick buck, not to win the race to market. We deserve it because we are the Human Race, we are the market.

Detective Knowledge, Meet the Bot.

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
In this excerpt, our two detectives come finally come face to face with the pursuit of their unhappiness.  A whole lot quicker than they anticipated.

The white blip was still on the move.  The tunnel that led out of the station stretched east and west.  We hopped down to the track and followed the blip east.  The white seemed to be moving toward the edge of the screen faster and faster.  Before I knew it we were full out sprinting after the bot.  The staleness in the air became replaced by something solid, a choking smolder.  It grew stronger every few seconds as we raced down the tunnel.

Suddenly we were making better gain.  The blip had become a stationary dot then became a blip a moment later.  Only now it was moving west.  I nearly tripped over a track when I stopped, realizing it was coming straight at us.  Fast.

"What" Roman asked?  He looked at the screen, and then we both looked down the tunnel.  I slipped the tracker in my coat pocket and drew my piece.  We backed up slowly and then moved apart toward the walls of the tunnel as if we were trying to avoid an oncoming train.

I suddenly started wondering whether our bullets were going to do the job.  Whether these bot's high-density polymer chassis could withstand high velocity projectiles.  Why the hell hadn't I asked Dalia where the most vulnerable area on the bot lay?  Would she have even been able to answer questions about destroying machines she only thought about building?

Why would you need to protect yourself against machines that can't hurt people?  It was one of the rare moments when you get to actually stand on the edge of a tipping point.

The bot came down the tunnel just like a train, its arms and legs moving like a man.  I might have thought it was a man until it got close enough to gleam.  A wordless sound filled the tunnel, a frightening jabber that speed up as the bot emerged between us.

I make words.
